Kentucky agencies gathered recently to discuss preserving its deteriorating barns, an important part of the state’s rural landscape.
The Rural Heritage Development initiative program, a three-year pilot program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is trying to save barns throughout Kentucky counties and by reusing the structures for other purposes.
A statewide barn alliance within the state would create a network to provide farmers with contractors, technical assistance, tax credits or other information that would help save barns.
It is possible for a farmer to be reimbursed for 50 percent of the improvements costs. Millions have been awarded through grant programs to agritourism and other activities. Barn preservation could also qualify.
The national alliance promotes the documentation of barns through photographs and surveys and shares information on the history and maintenance of barns.
