The Presidio Federal Trust Board of Directors is considering a proposal by GAP founder Daniel Fisher to construct a large, modern glass and masonry structure on the parade ground to house his collection of contemporary art.
The question the Board faces is whether a Contemporary Art Museum belongs at the Presidio, in the Presidio National Park and Historic Landmark District. The State Historic Preservation Office, the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation all say no.
It is argued that it does not fit in and changes the atmosphere of the park, giving it more of an urban feel. The museum will cause a traffic increase that will lead to delays entering and leaving the park.
If four of the seven Presidio board members turn Fisher down he will most likely return to earlier discussions with San Francisco museums. What’s your take?
